Do You Have a Favorite Dog Run from Your Own Competition Days?
Of course! Rosa needed 1 cattle leg to finish her WTCH. Cattle at the South Texas trial were miserable corrientes. They didn't want to repen – several runs before me cattle had to be repenned with people, dogs and a 4 wheeler. I didn't have much hope. No one got near the center pen on Course B. So my hopes weren't high of even getting through the course – oh did I mention the first panel was 2' under water? I asked for the calves to be turned out. Somehow we got them to the first panel. Then they stuck on the high spot behind it. I sent Rosa 3 time on an away.... she'd cut in. So I told her “ fine! Do it your way”! She heeled them hard out of the corner... trotted them on the cross drive and they were coming out of the second panel, I sent her against the fence to tun them and bring them to the center, I realized these calves had a large flight zone bubble... I moved to my right which helped turn them toward the center. Rosa held the away side to get two into the center. The high headed gray brahman with very floppy ears wasn't about to go in. I got her nose and front feet in the pen. One move to close and they all jumped out before closing the gate. Oh well. Better than I'd seen. I put them in a corner to open the repen gate. Then we slowly walked them into the repen. Rosa was the muscle in the rear.... I held the head to turn them in. It was calm. We won the HIT and finished that WTCH. ON VERY HARD cattle. That made the WTCH that special. We also beat 7 top finals dog. LOL That was icing. ;-)
What's the Most Memorable or Unexpected Moment You've Experienced While Judging?
Farm trial in the northeast. They had to separate 5 from 15 geese. She and her Aussie got it done … then the geese pushed the gate open at the bottom... and they had to redo the sort again. By then the dog knew the job – and did it mostly by herself. Made me proud of the breed.
